Area Boards

Convening discussions about area priorities

Area Boards are a key forum for bringing together leaders of schools in an area of the our large and diverse county to discuss key issues. The conversations that take place in these Boards helps to ensure that the experience, questions and insights of leaders in every part of the county are represented in KALE.

The Area Boards have increasingly strong links with a number of local, Headteacher-led schools networks and groups that exist in the county. The Area Board serves to connect these important networks with each other and where there are shared issues, to amplify them.

Agendas range from:

  • Identifying the local foci within countywide issues so that solutions can be tailored to meet specific need
  • Gathering and sharing local insights and feedback and updating each other on what is important in the sector
  • Identifying areas where the KALE community can support leaders, shaping approaches together and consulting on the impact to make sure that it meets need

KALE currently has four Area Boards covering the areas of North, South, East and West Kent. As we move towards the planned Local Government Reorganisation, we will be carefully considering possible changes to our structure to continue to meet area need in a new context.

Each Board meets 3 times per academic year with additional ad hoc meetings as necessary.

Membership includes representatives of all parts of the area and all types, phases and sizes of schools. We aim to ensure that members include links out to all the local, Headteacher-led networks in the area.

Each Board includes:

  • a mix of primary and secondary Headteachers from maintained and academy schools and from special and mainstream schools and alternative curriculum settings. Approximately 12-14 leaders typically per Board)
  • Representatives from the various Headteacher-led networks in the 
  • At least 1 CEO of a MAT
  • An FE College leader who connects KALE with the Kent FE Network


The Boards are also attended by:

  • KCC Assistant Directors, Education
  • The Director of the Teaching School Hubs for the county
  • Improvement Advisers from The Education People
  • Representative from LLSE
